Roofing Squares Calculator

Estimate a re-roof in seconds. Enter the roof footprint and pitch and this calculator returns the roof area in squares, the number of shingle bundles (three per square), and ridge cap bundles. A square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.

A 6/12 roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of run.

Most pros add 10% for cuts, breakage, and overage.

Estimate

No drip sequence. The estimate lands in your inbox and in VertaFlow so I can turn it into a real quote if you want one.

How to use the roofing squares calculator

  1. Enter the footprint length and width of the roof in feet.
  2. Enter the pitch as rise per 12 inches of run (e.g. 6 for a 6/12 roof).
  3. Read the roof squares, shingle bundles, and ridge cap bundles.
  4. Add waste for hips, valleys, and starter/cap courses.

Questions

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Most architectural shingles come three bundles to a square (100 square feet). This calculator uses three bundles per square by default.

Why does roof pitch change the number of squares?

A steeper roof has more surface area than its flat footprint. The calculator applies a slope multiplier from the pitch, so a 6/12 roof covers more squares than its length × width alone.
